Release of the 1926 film “Kurutta Ippeiji” directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, with a new soundtrack performed by Vetrophonia.

“Kurutta Ippeiji (A Page of Madness)” is a silent film created by the Japanese director Teinosuke Kinugasa in 1926. The screenplay was written together with Yasunari Kawabata, a celebrated representative of the avant-garde literary movement of Neo-Perceptionists known as “Shinkankanu”, who would later win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968. Considering the overall traditional orientation of the Japanese cinema of that time, the film greatly surpassed all concepts about experimental art and made a big sensation among critics although remained almost unnoticed by the masses.
The story unfolds in a mental asylum where a woman is kept after her attempt to drown her own daughter. Her husband, a former sailor, takes a job there as a janitor in hopes of eventually rescuing his wife from captivity but soon he himself starts loosing his mind… The film includes striking scenes of the emotions of characters, also those of asylum patients whose insane visions are shown using unconventional analogue special effects, which still produce quite a psychoactive impact even on the modern viewer.
The short film screening in 1926 was accompanied by live musicians playing and comments from “benshi” – professional narrators who have put semantic accents in the story, but there is no information about the original music score. At different times several soundtracks for the movie were composed, all in different styles – from classical taiko drums and jazz interpretations to indie rock and experimental electronics. Backed by the successful experience of recording soundtracks for silent cinema (let us recall “The Space Voyage” from 1936 directed by N. Zhuravlev), St. Petersburg’s duo Vetrophonia continues to contribute to the legacy of avant-garde cinematography in its trademark retro-futuristic style. With the use of electronics, archival samples, classical strings, brass and self-built metallic instruments Nikolay Sudnik and Alexander Lebedev-Frontov managed to create a sound canvas ideally fitting every scene of the film. The soundtrack is made both with meticulous approach and light humour, it follows all changes of moods and guarantees a truly unique watching experience enhancing both visual and emotional sides of this masterpiece of the Japanese silent cinema

En los campos de batalla, los cuerpos que caían muertos, quedaban insepultos. Nadie podía hacerse cargo de ellos. Nadie excepto los que acompañan al señor de los caídos, ellos eran los primeros en llegar siempre. Los cuervos y los lobos. Lobos y cuervos hacían acto de presencia siempre los primeros, como una avanzadilla, como una fría ola que llega desde lo profundo de los bosques y de las montañas. Al olor de la sangre vertida, queriendo llevarse su tributo carnal, los lobos y los cuervos deberán realizar un pago por ese pedazo de carne llevada. Alimento sagrado para animales sagrados. Dicho pago será el deber de acompañar las almas de los guerreros difuntos al lugar de donde cuervos y lobos surgieron. Deberán acompañar a las almas de los caídos en batalla hacia lo profundo del bosque, hacia lo profundo de la montaña. Y es ahí, que ayudados por la bruma y las nubes bajas que rodean los primeros y antiguos bosques, emprenderán el vuelo acompañados por los cuervos, y sus corceles serán tormentas, y sus nombres serán olvidados, aunque nunca se hayan marchado, como el señor de los difuntos que les capitanea, el que perdió un ojo por el conocimiento secreto primero y se ahorcó para convertirse en el invierno.
Y aunque se les conozca con mil nombres de hueste , de güestia, estantiga o estantigua, cuando se les vea y el incauto pregunte por su nombre, sólo uno le darán a este:
Gente de muertos, somos gente de muerte. Durante el invierno del 2016 al 2017, The Wyrm ha compuesto y grabado 10 temas que son los 10 cortes de su último trabajo sacado con GH Récords bajo el titulo:
Gente de muertos. Grabaciones, muchas de ellas de campo, recogiendo el ambiente de enclaves mágicos de distintos lugares sagrados que el propio artista ha ido grabando a lo largo del 2016 como pueden ser entre otras, picas de ajusticiamiento, cuevas, eremitorios como el de Cívica o distintos lugares de carácter sacro en Burgos, Valladolid, Coria, o castillos como el de Belmonte o el castillo de Alarcón entre otros.
10 temas que recogen en esencia pura al arquetipo del invierno, más un track dark ambient y otro de puro black metal.
Un trabajo conceptual que se ha gestado durante todo el año 2016 que esperamos hagan las delicias de los fieles seguidores de The Wyrm.
