In January 1992, IKON entered the studio to record what was supposed tob e the band`s debut single „As Time Goes By“ b/w „Never Ending“. Over three days from 17 january, a total of 8 songs were recorded and the band was reasonably satisfied with the results. Shortly afterwards, an accident lead tot he partial erasure oft he drums for «As Time Goes By“, making it impossible to finish and also wiping the plans for it tob e the main single track. The remaining songs were mixed over the following weeks, but the band was not happy with the results overall, so the project was shelved.

By mid 1992, IKON decided to attempt to remix the tracks and select another single option, but this time encountered a new problem: the tape was beginning to oxidize, making it impossible to play. The band was faced with the prospect of being forced to use the initial unsatisfactory mixes.

In 2016 this original IKON session, known as «As Time Goes By“, was given one final facelift by repairing and cleaning up any tape issues, and presenting the songs in a more natural light. It was decided that no more songs would be added to CD1, not to detract from IKON’s studio debut.

CD2 contains the complete January 1st Arthouse live show, which has never been released in full. This show was recorded within a couple of weeks of the Frontline session, and is a a fitting addition.

Aviador Dro are without a doubt the most avant-garde and influential techno-pop band from Spain. They started in 1979 and this year are celebrating their 40th anniversary playing shows, re-releasing some old works, publishing a book and also a new album.

«Acción Contra El Pasado” was recorded in Madrid in December of 1980 and is one of the oldest live performances of which there is a recording evidence. This concert is legendary not only for its age, but also for including some unreleased songs, a couple of early covers by Kraftwerk and Sex Pistols and vintage versions of classic tracks. «Aviador Dro y su Maquinaria Humana» (exactly as it was announced on the original flyer) was formed at that time by Biovac N, Fox Cicloide, Placa Tumbler, Derflex Tipo IARR, CTA 102, X, Metalina 2 and Cyberjet. A priceless piece of history restored and remastered from the original cassette recorded directly from the mixing desk.

Pale Awakening is the debut album by The Frozen Autumn, which originally saw the light in 1995 following the demotape Oblivion and various live gigs in Italy and abroad. These led to the CD release of this concept album with crepuscular sounds, at times inspired by the sound of 4AD and Projekt Records, that unfold between reflective and atmospheric moments, imbued with melancholy with more rhythmic openings, yet always characterized by a common feature: the oniric plane, the certainty of the existence of parallel realities, the escape from everyday life to embark on an inner journey, aware that «there is something beyond».

27 years after the first edition, Avantgarde Music re-releases Pale Awakening in two valuable collectible formats: 12 «colored double vinyl in a gatefold cover with lyrics.

    /// ENG ///

LA FIESTA TRISTE is the solo project of Javier Andreu (a.k.a. Fête Triste), a musician, producer, designer and photographer from Valencia (Spain).
He studied music and piano at the Official Music School. Later in life he taught himself to bass, electric guitar, drums, synthesizers and music production. This project arises from the ashes of other bands in which he has participated (Basura de Eva, VIE and Pronoise).
After some self-produced works, such as «Ciudades Invisibles» (2000), «Minimalista» (2005), or «Desaparecer» (2019), published on CD and digital platforms. In this new album Fête bets on the vinyl format and the «Do it yourself» production, with the collaboration of the label GH Records.

This new album closes a cycle of several years of producing and composing, and comprises a selection of 8 songs chosen from a large number recorded in recent years. The music, the concept, the design of the covers, have been entirely created by Fête, except for “Todos contra todos” a free version inspired by an original song by Sergio Alfonso (producer and drummer). The theme «To Helen» is a tribute to the romantic literature of Edgar Allan Poe, and the lyrics are taken from the author’s poem with the same title.

Mixing and mastering are carried out by the producer José M.ª Aboga and the promotional video for the song “Crepuscular” has been made by the video artist Lesya Yershova. Avencio Delgado collaborates with his label GH Records, Jesús CTG (APMV Asociación Promotora Multicultural Valencia / Emergencia Sonora https://emergenciasonora.es/) and Dani Sombra (Dark Valencia), collectives with tradition in this type of music in the city.

“La belleza del óxido /The beauty of rust” (2021) is a reflection of how time goes by, a metaphor for our fleeting existence. A poetic vision of the corrosion of the skin, of the soul, of age and of death, showing the beauty that exists in this decadent process, just as happens with the oxidation of metals in their exposure to time and the elements.
The sonic and aesthetic thread of the album is the reference to rust: noise, squeaks and metals, which accompany the melodies creating colorful passages that are mixed with elements of various musical styles from which it is influenced, such as EBM, post-punk, noise, psytrance, post-rock … always with his own very recognizable style, which consists of minimalist and repetitive dance electronic bases with melancholic melodies of guitar, bass and synthesizers.

In the midst of the forest, the floor is littered with monstrous heads and mythical figures, frozen in torturous combat or threatened by wild beasts. A dragon fights a dog and a wolf. A lion sinks its teeth into the fire-breathing monster’s chest.

This sacred grove, near Bomarzo in Lazio, Italy, reveals the nightmare vision of Vicino Orsini, a sixteenth century nobleman. It’s a forest of symbols, suggesting a civilisation overrun by the beasts, demons and monsters of the primordial world. Soon after Orsini’s death, trees began to close in on these many peculiar beings, and green moss would eventually seize them. Slowly, nature finished what he had started.

Flowers of Evil, the new studio album from Ulver, finds the wolf pack exploring the fear and wonder of mankind’s fall from redemption. Visions similar to those of Orsini come to mind, as untamed life abounds:

The threads of haunted places and images entwine. Have Ulver discovered new pastures under the sun? Or scoured the ruins of their own moonlit past? The truth is, they’re closer to their previous purlieu than perhaps ever before.

“Doom dance”, someone dubbed their last studio album, the critically acclaimed, Impala Award-winning The Assassination of Julius Caesar (2017). Flowers of Evil comes across as an unfeigned progression along the course set by that album, revealing a band moving deeper into beats and grooves, hooks and choruses, synths and guitars, yet sounding more stripped back, making room for the distinctive detail. Once again Michael Rendall (The Orb) and legendary producer Martin “Youth” Glover have taken crystalline care of the mix.

As Caesar demonstrated, Ulver haven’t abandoned any of their obsessions, worries or nightmares as they enter the gilded palace of pop. “One last dance / in this burning church”, Kristoffer Rygg announces on the album’s opening track, featuring old friend Christian Fennesz on guitar and electronics. It sees them locked inside their Hall of Mirrors. A slow build brings the music to the album’s pulsing theme:

With Flowers of Evil Ulver have fled a burning Rome, only to confront further crime and corruption. ‘Russian Doll’, the album’s first single, moves determinedly through the night, with a story of unfolding tragedy and misery. ‘Machine Guns and Peacock Feathers’ brings fiery end-time imagery – “barrels are burning / great art will be destroyed” – with a disco beat and flashy ’80s synths. Dismal cries resound on ‘Hour of the Wolf’; echoing Bergman’s classic film, the song is dedicated to the hour between night and dawn, “when most people die, when sleep is deepest, when nightmares are most real”. ‘Apocalypse 1993’ reveals Ulver at their catchiest, its bounding-goat groove running hand in hand with a grand chorus depicting the catastrophic events at Waco, Texas, during the winter of that year – the very same winter that saw the birth of Ulver’s first incarnation. From that thorny undergrowth, this is what they have become: an eclectic, many-headed beast, chanting the ecstasies of the spirit and the senses.

Flowers of Evil unfolds with the shattering second single, ‘Little Boy’. A mysterious beat moves the track towards its thunderous climax, and here Michael J. York’s ominous pipes melt into the softer, moodier ‘Nostalgia’, a ’70s soul shuffle, and the heart-breaking Talk Talk-esque balladry of ‘A Thousand Cuts’. Finally, the wolves are back in the palace of excess, waltzing the night away. Yet around them, the wilderness rises, triumphant; “grass will grow over your cities”, as the Bible says.

    Label: Avant! ‎– AV!050
    Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
    Country: Italy
    Released: 13 Sep 2017
Style: Synth-pop, Synthwave, Minimal, New Wave

Sally Dige is a multidisciplinary artist known for her darkly poetic yet highly danceable electro-pop songs, DIY stylistic videos, design and visual art. Sally‘s deep and commanding voice, coupled with her analogue-visual-processes and overlapping artistic mediums has formed an identity that oscillates between the edges of aggression and fragility, old and new. Holding On was created during the time of intense inner turmoil. Despite being stretched to her emotional limits, Sally did not let the weight of her circumstances break her, instead channeling all of her pain and fears into the production of a series of incredibly powerful songs. Stunningly, Sally used only her voice and a single synth to create this album. Even with so little gear, the songs are anything but minimal. Each song has a minimum of 100 tracks and, for some songs, 100 tracks for just the drum section alone. Every audible sound has 20 other sounds swimming beneath it. These are songs written for dance floors but are sung about loneliness, death and the meaninglessness of existence. Sally‘s work tows the line between a blissful innocence and a heavy darkness. Think Gina X flavored post punk-disco rubbing against Twitch-era Ministry‘s lost Sade collab or Enya on LSD after a break up.
